Central Okanagan Flooding – How You Can Help!

Thursday, May 11, 2017

The Central Okanagan has experienced some regional flooding over the past week, whereby hundreds of individuals have had to evacuate their homes. Over the coming days, it is anticipated that 1000’s more will be impacted.

Emergency Support Services (ESS)  continues to partner with The Salvation Army Kelowna Community Church in opening a Reception Centre for those who have received evacuation orders. The Reception Centre is located at 1480 Sutherland Ave. in Kelowna (corner of Burtch and Sutherland). Hours: 11 am – 8 PM.

HOW YOU CAN HELP!

  1. Help your neighbours. Check on the people around you, especially if you live in an area that has potential to flood. Can you assist them by helping to sandbag their property? Can you support those with mobility challenges, or the elderly get out of their home and to the Reception Centre?
  2. Provide a place for others. There are extremely limited hotel spaces available and therefore if you know of friends/family who have been evacuated, would you consider opening your home to them? If you have a spare room/space that you are willing to open up to someone in need, please send: Your Name, Address, Phone, Space available (how many people can you accommodate), can you host pets? to office@kelsa.ca. Please note that The Salvation Army is not screening either evacuees or home hosts but are simply providing a forum through which those who need accommodation can connect with those who have space to offer.
  3. Provide food/beverage support. The Salvation Army is currently providing refreshments to both evacuees in the Reception Center as well as going around the community to support those who are sandbagging and Emergency Personnel. Things needed are: *Gatorade/Powerade *Juice Boxes *Granola Bars *Fruit (apples, bananas, oranges) *Individually packed nuts / trail mix
These donations can be dropped off at Kelowna Community Church between 9 am – 4:30 PM
(Monday-Friday). PLEASE NOTE: We cannot accept any homemade products.
  4. Donate Financially – Donate to The Salvation Army Flood Relief Efforts either online or at any of our Thrift Stores or Church locations.

At this time we do NOT require any physical donations for flood victims. After assessing the damages, we will advise as to the needs of our neighbours.

Thank-you for your support and for caring for your neighbours and our community!

2016 Christmas Campaign Surpasses Goal

On November 17, 2016, The Salvation Army Central Okanagan set an ambitious Christmas Campaign goal of $750,000. While some final donations are still being processed, we are thrilled to announce that we except to reach a record $800,000 in donations.

“We are so grateful for the generosity of this community” says Pastor Darryl Burry, Executive Director of The Salvation Army Central Okanagan.  “The financial support we received from the kettles and our Christmas appeal will support the year-round programming and services we offer here in the Central Okanagan. We are so deeply thankful to all those who made this campaign a success – for the thousands of volunteer hours filled by those who rang bells, counted donations, packed bags, to schedulers, drivers and so much more. We are so blessed to have a community that cares for others and wants to make an impact in people’s lives.”

“It is amazing to see the kettles full of money every day throughout the campaign.” states Patty Lou Bryant, Communications Coordinator of The Salvation Army Central Okanagan. “In an era where few of us carry cash in our wallets, it is overwhelming to see the funds that are donated. Hundreds of people came into our office to wish us a Merry Christmas and drop off a donation. Truly our community cares and residents open their heart every Christmas as evidenced by their support.”

This Christmas, due to the generosity of this community, The Salvation Army Central Okanagan were able to Share Christmas with 560 local families which included toys for over 1100 local children.  Bryant says “Our motto is ‘Giving Hope Today’ and we will be able to continue to give hope into 2017 because of the generosity of our community.”
